BIO BESS & RAUL
BESS KUIL
Bess Kuil is a dancer, performer, choreographer and dance teacher based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She has experience in several dance styles as Modern dance, African dance Burlesque, Ballet but also various partner dance styles, including Brazilian Zouk and contact improvisation.
Bess graduated at the Theater School in Amsterdam at the dancers department in 2016. She danced and performed in different dance and performance styles in Europe and abroad.
Bess combines different dance traditions in her work as a teacher, performer and choreographer. What intrigues her the most about dance is the physical communication and the connection you can have with yourself, your dance partner(s), the audience, the space around you and the world. Dance is a universal language, that everybody understands. You don’t have to be a professional dancer to communicate with your body, so everybody can speak it.
Her classes and performances are mainly about body awareness, physical communication, transformation, personal growth, freedom in movement and the joy of dancing.
RAUL SALDARRIAGA
Raul Saldarriaga, a Contact Improvisation teacher and dancer based in Amsterdam, explores natural movements and ongoing discoveries within the dance realm. Raul did a Master’s in Choreography and Community from CODARTS University and FONTYS University, a Master’s in Interactive Media and Environments from Hanze university, complemented by Bachelor’s degrees in Contemporary Dance and Art Pedagogy in the Universidad Distrital in Colombia.
In Raul’s classes, participants embark on a journey of self-discovery, moving seamlessly from individual exploration to partnered techniques. The focus is on gravity, potential energy, body structures, balance, weight-sharing, and responsive movement, all aimed at encouraging spontaneous, organic movement and cultivating a deep connection with instinctual flight and fluid role transitions.
Raul finds purpose in the allure of the unknown within movement and the endless solutions that Contact Improvisation offers. This dance form aligns with his values of cherishing the present moment, embracing encounters opened to change plans and expectations every second, and fostering a lack of possession, akin to the metaphorical dance of love. Through Contact Improvisation, Raul creates an intimate and safe space where authenticity is paramount, allowing the beauty of movement to unfold naturally.
